APRIL 01 - CALAFATE (Excursion to Perito Moreno Glacier with entrance)

Breakfast. We will depart from the hotel lobby for our excursion to Perito Moreno Glacier. Distance: 80 km. Departure: 9:30 a.m. Return: approx. 5:30 p.m. This park has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The glaciers that gave it its name—about 47 in total—show a world from 10,000 years ago: cold and wild. The most famous is Perito Moreno Glacier, located at the southwestern end of Lake Argentino, 80 km from El Calafate. The glacier is named after the great Argentine explorer of the last century and is one of the few in the world that is advancing. This has made it one of South America's greatest natural spectacles. From time to time, its 60-meter-high front breaks off huge ice walls, as big as buildings, which fall into the waters of Brazo Rico or Canal de los Témpanos, then float through the canal toward the main body of the lake. But that's not all. As the glacier advances, it approaches the Magallanes Peninsula on the opposite shore of the lake, where the walkways and viewpoints are located. The cycle lasts 4 to 6 years and ends up dividing the lake in two. Brazo Rico becomes dammed and rises about 35 meters above its level. The waters slowly carve a tunnel in the glacier's front until pressure causes it to collapse. The spectacle is indescribable. At the end of the tour, return to the hotel. Accommodation.
